The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test, Third Edition (NNAT®3), is published by Pearson and used by schools from kindergarten through grade 12 to screen for gifted and talented (GATE) programs. How many questions, and how long does it take?
Every level of the NNAT®3, from Level A (kindergarten) through Level G (grades 10–12), has 48 questions and a roughly 30-minute administration window. That works out to well under a minute per question on average, which is one reason format familiarity matters: a child who has to stop and decode an unfamiliar layout is spending time that should go toward the actual reasoning.

How is it scored?
Results are reported as a Naglieri Ability Index (NAI), a standard score with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 16 — the same structure many parents recognize from IQ-style scoring. Reports can also include a percentile rank (the share of same-age peers a child scored at or above) and a stanine, a 1-to-9 band where 1–3 is below average, 4–6 is average, and 7–9 is above average.
One detail catches many parents off guard: the NNAT® norms by age, not grade. Pearson's published score tables compare each child to others close in age, using one-month intervals through age 9, widening to three-month intervals for ages 10 and 11. For most Grade 2 test-takers, that means two classmates born even a month or two apart can technically be measured against slightly different norm groups, which is part of why the same raw performance can produce different percentiles for different children in the same room.
To make the percentile concrete: a percentile rank of 85 means a child scored as well as or better than 85 percent of same-age peers in the norm group — not that they answered 85 percent of questions correctly. Raw accuracy and percentile rank are related but different numbers, and a school report will usually lead with the percentile rather than a simple correct-answer count.
Is there a penalty for guessing?
Scoring does not deduct points for a wrong answer, since the raw score is simply the number of items answered correctly, so a blank and an incorrect answer count the same. The practical takeaway for test day: a child should attempt every question using their best reasoning, not skip ahead, but shouldn't be coached to fill in random answers just because there's no direct penalty. A scattershot guess is far less likely to be right than an honest attempt, penalty or not.
What is the result used for?
This is genuinely local. Some districts use the NNAT® as a universal screener for every student at a given grade. Others use it only after a teacher or parent referral, and combine it with achievement data, teacher input, portfolios, or additional testing. Professional guidance on gifted identification generally favors looking at multiple sources of evidence rather than treating one score as a permanent label — ask your school which model it follows.
Universal screening and referral-based screening produce meaningfully different pools of students. A universal model tests every child at a given grade automatically, which tends to surface students whose reasoning ability wasn't otherwise visible in the classroom. A referral-based model depends on a teacher or parent noticing something first, which can miss quieter students or those whose strengths show up more in visual reasoning than in classroom participation.
