Douglas County gifted screening and CogAT guide.

Douglas County School District, covering Castle Rock, Parker, Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree, identifies gifted students using the CogAT, the Cognitive Abilities Test, which covers verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning.

This guide is written for DCSD parents, and it comes with an unusual warning: this is the one district in our research where we would tell you to call the office rather than trust any page, including this one.

What Douglas County says about screening

The district uses the CogAT as a universal screener, given to whole grades rather than only to students who were referred. Identification looks for roughly the top 5 percent on a national comparison, weighed inside a body of evidence rather than applied as a single pass mark.

What makes DCSD harder to write about than most districts is not the criteria, it is the timing. The grades being screened are moving, and the public record has not fully caught up. Here is the clearest picture we can give:

The CogAT's Nonverbal battery is the closest in format to the NNAT®: visual pattern and spatial reasoning with no reading demand. The Verbal and Quantitative batteries ask about word relationships and number reasoning instead, so a child taking the full CogAT is doing three different kinds of thinking rather than the same task three times.

Why the change matters more than the dates

If the 2nd grade universal screen goes away, the practical effect for families is significant. Universal screening is automatic, so nobody has to notice anything. Referral-based screening is not: somebody, a teacher or a parent, has to actively ask. Districts that move from universal to referral typically identify fewer students from families who did not know a referral was an option.

So if you have a younger child in DCSD, the useful question is not "when is the test" but "is my child's grade still being screened automatically, and if not, how do I request it?" That is a different conversation, and it is the one worth having this year.

Why school pages contradict each other here

Individual DCSD school pages were written at different points in this transition. Some still describe a 3rd grade screen. Some describe 6th grade, which was accurate for 2025-26 but may not be going forward. Some describe 2nd grade in February, which was also accurate for 2025-26.

None of them are being dishonest. They are snapshots from different moments in a moving process. Which is exactly why, for this district, we would point you at the phone number rather than at any page.
