Long Beach Unified GATE and CogAT guide.

Long Beach Unified School District uses the CogAT, the Cognitive Abilities Test, as its GATE screener. LBUSD refers to the three sections as Verbal, Quantitative, and Figural reasoning.

This guide is written for LBUSD parents who want the actual dates, which the district publishes in its assessment calendars rather than on its GATE page, plus an honest account of what LBUSD does not publish.

What LBUSD says about identification

Students take part in universal screening once during 2nd grade and again in 4th grade. Universal means the whole grade, so no referral or sign-up is needed for the screen itself.

LBUSD follows California GATE standards in using multiple measures rather than one score. Alongside the CogAT, the district lists student achievement reports, district assessments, teacher observations, and state assessment results. It does not publish a qualifying percentile, and it does not publish which CogAT form or level it uses.

The CogAT's Figural battery is the closest in format to the NNAT®: visual pattern reasoning with no reading demand. The Verbal and Quantitative batteries ask about word relationships and number reasoning instead, so a child taking the full CogAT is doing three genuinely different kinds of thinking.

Why the October start catches families out

Most parents assume gifted screening happens later in the year, and in many districts it does. In Long Beach the screener opens in the first week of October, which for a 2nd grader is only a few weeks into the school year. A family that starts thinking about it at winter break has already missed it.

There is a second reason the 2nd grade date matters: GATE services do not begin until 3rd grade. So the 2nd grade screen is the one that determines whether a child starts services at the first opportunity. The 4th grade screen is a real second chance, not a formality, but it costs a year of services.

Two things worth knowing that LBUSD does not put on its GATE page

Identification does not transfer in. If your child was identified as GATE in another district and you move to Long Beach, that identification does not carry over automatically. Call the GATE office to ask what LBUSD needs.

PALS is a different thing. LBUSD runs a separate track called PALS for 1st and 2nd graders that does not require GATE identification. Families sometimes confuse the two. Ask your school which one they are describing.

1. What is my child's actual testing date inside the October to November window?
2. What is the difference between the pre-test and the post-test, and does my child take both?
3. Is there a score or percentile you are looking for, and what else goes into the decision?
4. When and how will we hear the result?
5. If my child is not identified in 2nd grade, what happens in 4th?
6. We moved here and our child was identified elsewhere. What do you need from us?
