Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District identifies GATE students using the CogAT, the Cognitive Abilities Test, which covers verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning.

This guide is written for PYLUSD families in Placentia, Yorba Linda and the parts of Anaheim, Brea and Fullerton the district serves.

What PYLUSD says about identification

All 3rd and 4th grade students are screened. Students in grades 5 through 7 may be tested, but only on a referral from a teacher, administrator, counselor, or parent. That parent option matters: you do not need to wait for the school to raise it.

Qualification is described as a combination of factors rather than a single number: a standardized ability test, a standardized achievement test, a student portfolio, gifted student characteristics, and impact factors. The district does not publish a cutoff score, and does not publish which CogAT form or level it uses.

The CogAT's Nonverbal battery is the closest in format to the NNAT®: visual pattern and spatial reasoning with no reading demand. The Verbal and Quantitative batteries ask about word relationships and number reasoning instead.

PYLUSD publishes its own practice activities, which is unusual

Most districts say nothing about how to prepare. PYLUSD publishes grade 3 and grade 4 practice activities on its GATE identification page, covering all three CogAT batteries: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal. It also links sample CogAT items.

That is worth knowing for two reasons. It tells you the district considers familiarity with the format reasonable rather than improper. And it is free, from the people administering the test, so it is the first thing to look at regardless of what else you do.

The referral path is the part families miss

Third and fourth grade screening is automatic. From 5th grade on, it is not. A 6th grader who has grown into it, or who moved into the district after 4th grade, will not be looked at unless a teacher, administrator, counselor or parent puts them forward.

Since the district explicitly lists parents as one of the people who can refer, this is something you can start yourself. The relevant question for an older student is not "when is the test" but "how do I put my child forward for it."

2. For a 5th to 7th grader: how do I submit a referral, and is there a deadline?
3. What weight do the portfolio and impact factors carry next to the test score?
4. When will we be notified of the result?
5. What GATE program choices are available at our school starting in 4th grade?
6. If my child is not identified this year, can they test again?
