GATE is Tucson Unified School District's Gifted and Talented Education program. The district's GATE Testing and Placement Office uses multiple measures, including the CogAT, the Cognitive Abilities Test, which covers verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning, and the Raven Progressive Matrices, a nonverbal pattern test.

This guide is for TUSD families in Tucson who want to know who gets tested, when, and how placement works.

What Tucson Unified says about GATE testing

All 1st and 5th graders are tested unless a parent submits the district's Decline of Universal Testing form. For kindergarten, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 6th grade, a parent completes the Request for Testing form, either for a first evaluation or to retest for the full-day Self-Contained program. Out-of-district students use the same form.

Students who already qualified for Self-Contained are not retested, and that qualification follows them in TUSD through the end of 8th grade.

How scores turn into placement

TUSD offers several levels of service: full-day Self-Contained classes, a Dual Language Cluster program at Hollinger K8, Cluster classrooms at select schools, a 90-minute Pull-Out program at every elementary school for grades 1-5, and Open Access programs (Tully Elementary Magnet and Roberts-Naylor K8) that need no qualifying score.

The current testing pages do not list cutoffs. The most recent criteria the district has posted, in its 2022-23 GATE Scope and Sequence, tie placement to CogAT and Raven stanines (a 9 stanine is the 96th to 99th percentile, an 8 is the 89th to 95th) and a total NCE score, with 258 as the dividing line between Self-Contained and Pull-Out offers in several cases. Self-Contained offers also depend on space and your GATE feeder pattern. Ask the office whether those criteria still apply this year.

Parents who disagree with a result can file a GATE Placement Appeal through the district's online form.

Preparing calmly

If you want to help at home, keep it light: 10 to 15 minutes a day of puzzles and reasoning talk, and at least two full timed practice tests close to test day so the format is not a surprise. Practice teaches your child what the questions look like and gives them ways to approach and think through them, so test day feels familiar instead of surprising.
