San Ramon Valley Unified GATE and CogAT guide.

San Ramon Valley Unified uses the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to identify students for GATE. The CogAT measures reasoning in three areas: verbal (words), quantitative (numbers), and nonverbal (shapes and figures). The same CogAT results also decide who is first eligible for the district’s Academic Talent Program (ATP), its magnet classes for highly gifted students.

This guide is written for SRVUSD families. Every 2nd grader is offered the CogAT at school, so for most families the spring of 2nd grade is the main testing moment.

What GATE gives your child in San Ramon Valley

1. GATE identification in elementary school: in grades 3 to 5, GATE-identified students are in every class, and teachers differentiate their teaching within the class.
2. Individually appropriate courses in middle school: GATE-identified middle schoolers are placed in courses that fit them, and teachers differentiate within those classes.
3. A path to the Academic Talent Program (ATP): the CogAT your child takes for GATE is also the first step for ATP. Elementary ATP is an academically gifted class at Bella Vista Elementary for 4th and 5th graders, with fast-paced, complex, individualized curriculum. Students usually come from six to eight different schools, and 4th grade ATP students move right into 5th grade ATP without retesting.
4. Middle school ATP: a Core class in English language arts and history at Diablo Vista, Gale Ranch, and Windemere Ranch middle schools, where students stay together as a group through 6th, 7th, and 8th grade.

How San Ramon Valley tests for GATE

SRVUSD offers the CogAT in three ways:

1. Spring testing for every 2nd grader: all 2nd graders are given the chance to take the CogAT at their own school in the spring, during the school day. No registration is needed. Parents get an email from the school with details in the spring, and parents who do not want their child tested can contact the classroom teacher.
2. Optional fall test: current 3rd graders who want to retake the CogAT, and students in grades 3 to 7 who are new to SRVUSD and have not taken it through the district, can register for a Saturday test. The 2026-2027 fall test is Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Registration opened August 13 and closed September 27, 2026, and the district lists an optional $75 contribution.
3. Transfers already identified as gifted: students identified as gifted in another district are considered under SRVUSD’s own GATE criteria. Parents email the identification paperwork (a letter showing the student was in a gifted program, plus the test names and scores used) to Ramaa Ravi at rravi@srvusd.net for approval by the Director of Elementary Education.

How San Ramon Valley decides who is identified

SRVUSD’s GATE Testing page and GATE FAQ set the cutoffs on the CogAT, using national norms. (The fall registration page calls CogAT results “one component” of GATE identification, so ask the Assessment Office if you want to know whether anything else is considered.) A student is identified as GATE in one of two ways:

1. A National Age Percentile Rank (APR) of 98 or above.
2. An APR of 97 plus a 99 in one area: a student with an APR of 97 who also scored a 99 in Verbal, Quantitative, or Nonverbal is identified as GATE.

Age percentile ranks compare your child with children of the same age across the country, so a younger 2nd grader is compared with other children their age. SRVUSD posts national (APR) results in the Infinite Campus parent portal.

ATP uses a different, local yardstick. To be initially eligible for ATP selection, a student needs a Local Percentile Rank (LPR) of 97 or above, which compares students only with other SRVUSD students. Local scores are not posted in the portal; parents can request their child’s LPR by emailing assessments@srvusd.net. Families of eligible students are notified by letter. For elementary ATP, final selection also uses a writing sample, an English language arts task, a math task, and a gifted traits survey collected on a district assessment day. Students must be enrolled in SRVUSD and take the CogAT through the district to be considered for ATP.

SRVUSD does not publish which CogAT level students take. The CogAT level built for 2nd grade is Level 8, where the answer choices are pictures, so no reading is needed. See NNAT® vs CogAT® vs OLSAT® for how the CogAT compares with other gifted tests.

Results, retesting, and appeals

2nd grade CogAT results are posted in the Infinite Campus parent portal after spring break; in 2026 the release was April 13 to 17. Fall test results for 2025 were released December 5, 2025, about three weeks after the test. A student who tested in 2nd grade can retake the CogAT once more at the fall test in 3rd grade. SRVUSD does not publish an appeal process or a policy on private testing, so ask the Assessment Office at assessments@srvusd.net or 925-552-2967.

How to prepare effectively for the CogAT

1. Learn the format. Go through the three parts of the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT): verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal, and after every question talk through the rule: what changed and what stayed the same, not just which answer is right.
2. Practice 10 to 15 minutes a day, for as long as you can. Reasoning skills build like a muscle, a little at a time. A few weeks of practice helps, but months of short, steady sessions build much more. With 2nd grade testing in the spring, a fall start gives your child months of practice.
3. Spend extra time on the weakest type. Most children find one or two question types harder. Focus there once the basics feel familiar.
4. Take full, timed practice tests: at least two, and more is better. A full test is where your child learns pacing and how to work alone against a clock, the way test day works. Take several along the way, and save the last two for the final few weeks as a dress rehearsal.

Practice teaches your child what the questions look like and gives them ways to approach and think through them, so test day feels familiar instead of surprising.
