Deer Valley Unified School District, in the north Phoenix area, identifies gifted students with state-approved ability tests. For 2026-27 its schedule uses two of them: the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) for 1st and 2nd grade blanket testing, and the NGAT (Naglieri General Ability Tests) online for fall referral testing in grades 1 to 6. Both cover verbal, quantitative and nonverbal reasoning.

What Deer Valley says about identification

Arizona requires districts to identify a student as gifted when they score at the 97th percentile or above in any one of three areas: verbal, quantitative or nonverbal. Deer Valley uses age-level norms. Students scoring from the 94th to 96th percentile join the district's Talent Pool and can receive enrichment. At Title 1 schools, local norms let students from the 80th to 96th percentile receive enrichment services.

Higher bars for Renaissance and Bright Beginnings

Being identified gifted is not the same as qualifying for the district's full-day programs. The Renaissance Highly Gifted Academies (grades 1-8) require all three scores at the 90th percentile or higher with at least 280 combined percentile points, or an IQ of 132 or higher, plus above-grade-level achievement and parent and teacher profiles. Bright Beginnings (K-2) requires the 90th percentile in one of the three areas. These are applications, not automatic placements.

How to prepare without adding pressure

A January test date means winter break falls right before testing, so start well ahead. The CogAT has verbal, quantitative and nonverbal parts, so short practice across all three is more useful than drilling one.

If you choose to practice, keep it short and calm: 10 to 15 minutes a day, plus at least two full timed practice tests before the test date so pacing is not a surprise. Practice teaches your child what the questions look like and gives them ways to approach and think through them, so test day feels familiar instead of surprising.
